Abstract
This article examines Farouk Shousha’s collection I Love You Until I Cry within the framework of pragmatic theory. Shousha is considered a poet of the 1960s—or the second generation of Egyptian poets—as he began his poetic career and published his collections during this period, which was extremely critical for Egypt and the entire Arab world. The poet witnessed many political and social events that shaped his life and prompted him to respond to their powerful repercussions in his poetry. The necessity of this research lies in the importance of pragmatic theory, which has become widespread as one of the most effective mechanisms in linguistic studies. It addresses its most important pillar, speech acts, and plays a vital role in clarifying intended meanings after their predication and revealing their content. The researchers chose this poet because he was among those who shared in the suffering of his people and confronted the circumstances surrounding them within Egyptian society, which was affected by events and subsequently moved toward independence and the rise of liberation movements. Therefore, this research, relying on the descriptive-analytical method, aimed to focus on studying the mechanisms of pragmatic analysis, including temporal and spatial references, and the five types of speech acts—informative, directive, obligatory, declarative, and expressive—as classified by Searle, one of the founders of pragmatic theory. One of the most important findings of this research is that the temporal references carried symbols with multiple meanings, representing social and political events and revealing the poet’s sorrowful vision of the miserable national and political reality he was experiencing. The poet’s use of spatial references to the earth and sky also enriched the meanings, as he became one with his homeland, merging with it in order to revive it, bring the people out of darkness into light, and change their circumstances. He employed the symbolism of the sky as the source of mercy and blessings. The declarative verbs in this collection expressed the poet’s feelings of rejection and suffering regarding the ills and corruption of society. The directive verbs in his poems indicated questions posed through his melancholic soliloquies. The obligatory verbs carried connotations of warning and promise concerning Egyptian society. The explanatory verbs expressed the psychological and social burdens weighing on the poet, such as corruption, while the declarative verbs revealed an acknowledgment of the manifestations of backwardness and hypocrisy prevalent during that period.
