Abstract

Novelists use place in the novel through description that allows the reader to perceive it visually, but this description alone is not enough to create a “narrative place.” Rather, the place is penetrated by characters who give it their own points of view, creating an interaction between place, events, and characters. The book distinguishes between categorical description, which aims to represent things in their entirety, and expressive description, which reflects the effect of place on the psychology of characters. In this article, we review the description techniques of writer Zoya Pirzad in her novel “I Will Turn Off the Lamps,” where she relies on descriptive paintings that focus on sensory details and poetic focus. The relationship between the characters and their places also appears in the novel, which is reflected in the characters’ feelings towards these places, such as the intimate relationship between the mother and the places of her children, or the psychological tension in some other places. The focus in the novelist work was also on the use of graphic images, especially simile and metonymy. Rhetoric appears in comparing things in multiple ways, such as comparing humans to things or to the animal and plant world. The author uses simile not only to observe reality, but also to express the inner feelings of her characters. It also highlights the use of metonymy to convey moral meanings without declaring them, which adds depth to the text and intensifies the meanings.
