Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of Jalal Barjas's world vision, his personal experiences, and how it shadows the formulation of the novel "Dafater al-Warraq" to show how the speech is stereotyped, activated, and exercises power by symbolic elites to influence society. The researchers followed the critical approach within the framework of Teun Van Dijk's theory of critical discourse analysis. Following the study conducted in the novel "Dafater al-Warraq" and Jalal Barjas's biography entitled "Neshij al-Doodook", we noticed that Barjas employed his personal experiences and beliefs through what he called (atmospheric noise) in "Neshij al-Doodook" and (voice) in "Dafater al-Warraq"; he made his own discourse through them, which became his voice to speak out and protest against poverty and corruption of governments, officials, and their sons. We also explained how Barjas criticized the censorship exercised by governments on systems, experienced in his professional and personal life. We also found in the "Dafater al-Warraq" and "Neshij-al-Doodook" many sentences and lexicons revealing his love for tradition and resentment of modernity. We also noted that his leftist ideas and communist upbringing led to the formation of a communist intellectual tendency, clearly touched on in the "Dafater al-Warraq". Another usage Barjas worked on to create discourse and influence on the individual and society was employing literature and the heroes of the most famous international novels, allowing the hero of his novel, Ibrahim al-Warraq, to impersonate the heroes and complete the work or fulfill the role assigned to him.
