Abstract

Semiotics is the science of signs and signals. Its foundations were laid by Riffater. Semiotic theory focuses on two methods: the first is superficial reading, and the second is deep reading. In the first stage, attention is paid to searching for meaning alone, and in the second stage, attention is paid to linguistic connotations and hidden and internal relationships. It then addresses identifying the important elements in the text, along two axes: the original meaning and synonymy. The reader or critic then moves on to understanding the lexical and semantic connections. These semantic studies lead to the discovery of the lexical fields of poetry in the literary text. Riffaterre's semiotic theory is concerned with multiple meanings and reveals the hidden corners of poetry. The research results show that the colors red, black, and green, from a semiotic perspective, are the original meanings for the poet to denote the painful reality and despair in the Arab society. The color green is considered by him a symbol of hope, change, and new growth. The current research, using a descriptive-analytical approach, aims to study the types of color connotations in Khalil Hawi's poetry and to extract and analyze the original meaning and synonyms related to each color. The research results show that synonyms are obtained from the coherent lexical fields in Khalil Hawi's poetry. Wine, thunder, tobacco, etc.
