Abstract

Understanding and examining syntactic structures play an important role in linguistic analysis, particularly through the lens of modality, which interprets the author's point of view. Modality refers to the speaker's attitudes or opinions regarding the truthfulness of propositions and reflects the thoughts and beliefs of the writer or speaker. It serves as an advanced tool for analyzing narrative discourse, from the sentence level to the entire text. This framework enables analysts to examine the author's attitudes and perspectives through modal indicators such as obligation, desire, and perception. Applying this framework not only helps identify cognitive style in literary texts but also allows analysts to explore the complex effects of modality on meaning and narrative understanding. Among the theorists, Paul Simpson has addressed modality practically, combining insights from other scholars. In Simpson’s proposed model, modality is divided into four types: imperative, aspirational, epistemic, and perceptual. This study attempts to examine the dominant modality from the perspective of the speaker or narrator in the novel Hawler Habibati, based on Simpson’s model. The results show that analyzing this modal model provides a deep understanding of the attitudes and perspectives of the characters and the author, capturing the deeper meaning and original purpose of the author through the linguistic tools used in the novel.
