The Significance of the Phrasal Verb in the collection "December Nahdatat" "Hassan Ali Al-Batran's Very Short Story"

Abstract

Literature in the current era has kept pace with the latest changes in the modern world, and the reason for these developments is due to political, social, and cultural conditions. The very short story is one of these advances that took place and continues to take place in the arena of literary storytelling. The genre is based on several pillars about which critics have disagreed, so the mention of the story, unity of thought, and condensation are its fixed pillars. In addition to some narrative and architectural techniques such as the verbality of sentences, paradox, and the disappointment of the waiting horizon, which some critics have identified as among the main pillars of the very short story. The study focuses on the actual sentence in the very short story, showing its role and the connotations it carries in the stories of the collection "December Nahidat" by the Saudi storyteller Hassan Ali Al-Batran, as well as the reason for the storyteller's reliance on it in the architecture of the very short story. The study utilized the "structuralist approach", which examines the architecture and construction of the very short story and focuses on the connotations carried by verb phrases without nouns in the sample stories. The research concluded that relying on verb phrases in the construction of the very short story leads to characterizing the story text with "condensation", "tension and crisis", and "accelerating the pace of events", while using noun phrases instead of verb phrases takes away these features. The thematic unity was a permanent connotation in addition to the three connotations carried by the stories in the research sample, which confirms that these connotations and the phrasal verb itself are effective and influential mechanisms for providing and promoting thematic unity in the very short story.
