Manifestations of Iranian Culture and Literature in the Poetry of al-Ṣanawbarī

Abstract
Arabic and Persian stand as the two primary languages of Islamic culture and civilization, with a history of cultural exchange spanning centuries prior to the advent of Islam. From the incorporation of Persian loanwords into Arabic to the reflection of Iranian rituals and traditions in Arabic poetry, the pre-Islamic era exemplifies the interaction between the two languages. However, the presence of Iranian culture and civilization in Arabic poetry reached its zenith during the Abbasid era; this period witnessed an unprecedented flourishing of literary, cultural, and civilizational exchanges between Iran and the Arab world, resulting in the formation of a rich Islamic culture and civilization through the fusion of Iranian and Arab traditions. Al-Sanawbari is a distinguished Arab Shiite poet whose work was deeply influenced by Iranian culture and literature; his poems reflect various facets of Iranian culture and civilization, achieving a high level of excellence and refinement in terms of elegance, graceful movement, and expressive beauty. This article aims to explore the various aspects of Iranian culture and literature present in Al-Sanawbari’s poetry through a descriptive-analytical approach. Grounded in the principles of comparative literature—specifically the French School—the study focuses on two main areas: a brief overview of Al-Sanawbari’s scholarly and literary life, followed by an analysis of his poems to highlight specific manifestations of Iranian culture and literature within them. One of the article’s key findings is that Al-Ṣanawbarī, possessing extensive knowledge of Iranian culture and literature, was influenced by various aspects thereof—particularly the invocation of Sassanid figures, references to Iranian cultural elements and customs (such as the ancient Nowruz and Mihragan festivals), and the use of Persian loanwords in his poetry—thereby demonstrating his profound familiarity with Sassanid culture and civilization. He also skillfully leveraged the political standing of Iranian ministers and families within the Abbasid court, praising them in poems dedicated to the Nowruz and Mihragan festivals.
