Abstract

Synonymity is one of the important linguistic phenomena, because the relationship between words and meaning is influential in people's communication. Synonymity, moreover, is one of the linguistic phenomena prevalent in most living languages. If one opens an old or new Arabic or a non-Arabic dictionary, he will sure face with synonyms
Arabic, too, is one of those languages that has been under the influence of this linguistic phenomenon and even it can be said that has been distinguished from other languages due to it, to the extent that as if it has become an inseparable attribute of Arabic language
However, the view and approaches of Arab researchers and linguists, and their statements about this phenomenon and its nature and true existence are different, as those books including these words lack proper methods and organizations. Because of this, synonym words turn into a linguistic phenomenon which reserves study. This article studies synonymity from different views such as lexical, expressional, historical transformations, studying the view points of traditional and modern researchers and philologists and finally the positive and negative consequences of synonymity
